  Legal Aid of Wyoming, Inc. is hosting a FREE Law Clinic for a self-help divorce on Saturday, May 19, 2012, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  This Clinic will be held in the Teton County Access to Justice Center located at 185 South Willow, Lower Level (Corner of Willow & Simpson, adjacent to Federal Courthouse)

  Discussion and demonstration of self-help forms for those seeking divorce without representation by an attorney. A Spanish translator will be present at the time of the clinic.

  Who We Are

  Legal Aid of Wyoming Inc. is a federally funded, non-profit law firm. We maintain four offices across Wyoming. The administrative office is located in Cheyenne and satellite offices are located in Casper, Lander and the Wind River Indian Reservation. Each office is staffed by attorneys and support staff, trained to assist you with your legal questions and problems.

  We provide legal assistance to low income individuals living in Wyoming.

  Legal Aid provides representation in many, though not all, types of civil cases. We cannot represent defendants in criminal cases. If you have been charged with a crime, you should request that the court appoint an attorney to represent you if you cannot afford one.

Legal Tips

• Business Waiver of Liability forms are attempts by organizations to limit their liability for injuries that occur on their property.
• Chapter 7 Bankruptcy eliminates most of your debt while Chapter 13 Bankruptcy restructures your debt and allows you time to pay off the debt.
• Not all debt can be eliminated in bankruptcy such as student loans, tax debt, alimony, child support, and some personal injury judgments.
• Debt collectors can only call you between the hours of 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. and may not call a consumer's place of employment, threaten legal action or use abusive language.
• It is recommended that you look at your credit report every year and before making a major purchase.
• You are entitled to one free copy of your credit report each year if you are unemployed and plan to look for a job within 60 days, you are on welfare, or your report is inaccurate because of fraud.
• The Social Security Administration recommends that you check your Social Security earnings at least once every three years.
• Be careful of giving out your Social Security number. Your Social Security number is the easiest way for a thief to steal your identity.
• Consider installing a locked mailbox at your residence to reduce the possibility of mail theft and fraud.
• The most important step to safeguarding your identity is to monitor your credit card statements and credit report.
• Funeral directors are required to give you itemized prices, both in person and, if you ask for them, over the phone.
• If you participate in an activity that is inherently dangerous and you get hurt, your ability to recover damages may be limited by your assumption of risk.
• Consider incorporating your small business, you will not only enjoy the benefits of limited personal liability but also generally pay less in taxes, namely the self-employment/Federal Insurance Contributions Act tax.
• Probate court determines if a document offered as a will is valid. If there is no will Probate court may appoint an administrator to divide the property.
• A handwritten will, or a “holographic will” that is entirely in the Testator’s handwriting is valid in Wyoming, regardless if the will has witnesses or not.
• The Department of Housing and Urban Development provides free information and solutions to people facing foreclosure as well as tips on avoiding foreclosure prevention scams.
• Advanced Health Care Directives allow you to appoint someone to look after your health care needs if you are unable and sets out guidelines as to your end of life decisions.
• Tenants have the right to live in a residence that is safe and sanitary with adequate electricity, heat, and plumbing.
• Landlords have the right to evict tenants who do not pay rent, cause damage to the residence or who do not follow the lease agreement.
• Visitation with the children is a separate issue and not tied to child support. A custodial parent cannot deny visitation due to lack of child support.
• In certain criminal proceedings, such as where there is a possibility of jail time, the law requires that if you cannot afford an attorney one will be appointed for you.
• In Wyoming civil cases you have the right to be represented by an attorney in any legal proceeding but there is no requirement that an attorney be appointed to you if you cannot afford an attorney.
• If you are involved in a car accident: assess injuries and call 911, get contact information from the other driver, take pictures, call your insurance, do not discuss blame, file an accident report with WyDOT.
• An adult serving alcoholic beverages to a minor is subject to the possibility of criminal prosecution for aiding and abetting the delinquency of a minor.
• Generally speaking you may represent yourself in court or have a lawyer represent your interests but in most courts in Wyoming, friends, relatives, and others are not allowed to represent your interests in court.
• If you decide to terminate your parental rights you may still be required to pay child support. Your parental rights may be terminated but not necessarily your parental obligations.
• If a child receives any state benefits such as Medicaid, food stamps, housing, etc., the Court will require the non-custodial parent(s) to pay the maximum amount of child support allowed under the law.
• If you believe the court ordered child support amount is too low or too high you can ask the court for a modification if you can show that there will be at least a 20% change in the child support amount.
• If you have a lawsuit for less than $5,000 you can bring an action through small claims court.
