Winter Weather Tips for Alzheimer's
Baby, It’s Cold – and Dangerous – Outside!
Winter weather can be life-threatening for the 10,300 Wyomingites living with Alzheimer’s or dementia. For their 16,000 family caregivers, keeping loved ones safe during cold months can be overwhelming. But with the right precautions, you can help prevent dangerous situations like wandering, falls, and exposure to the cold.
Here are a few winter safety tips from the Alzheimer’s Association:
- Take advantage of daylight – Shorter days can cause confusion and disorientation.
- Prevent wandering – Monitor restlessness, especially in the evening.
- Bundle up – Dress in warm, dry layers to prevent cold exposure.
- Buddy up – Caregivers, don’t hesitate to ask for help with errands and snow removal.
- Prevent slips – Assume all surfaces are slick and assist with careful walking.
🌨 Be prepared – Have a winter emergency plan in place. For more safety tips, visit www.alz.org. Need support? The Alzheimer’s Association 24/7 Helpline is available anytime at 800-272-3900.
